The only complaint I would have for this smoothie maker is it took way too long to come out on the market. This is a great smoothie maker for the price. It chops through ice and frozen fruit like it is butter, never any ice chips. I purchased this blender off of Amazon because of the good reviews it received, which I can usually rely on, but not so much this time.

I bought it mainly to make baby food, but also wanted it for smoothies and iced coffee drinks as well. I've only made baby food in it as of today. I had to add a LOT of water for the blender to "puree" the apple pieces. ("Puree" is in quotes because it didn't exactly puree the apples, just chopped them up finely) Because of all the water I had to add to get the blender to work, I then had to strain the excess off, which isn't a HUGE problem, but I'm a work at home mom, I don't have lots of free time. ALSO, when the blender was running, it smelt like burnt plastic. Which is why I haven't tried making anything in it with ice yet. I mean, if it smells like burnt plastic when it's "puree"-ing something soft, like apples, how is it supposed to crush ice??

I gave this blender 3 stars, because it works ok for softer things, but the smell of burning plastic makes me a bit apprehensive about it's quality and how long it'll last. In heindsight, I wish I had bought a different brand.

**I have to edit this review, because this blender just broke. I used it less than a half dozen times, and the rubber rings at the bottom just fell apart and now it leaks all over the place. I've had this blender for a long time now - I'd estimate probably 6 years. In all that time it's done me well for the most part. However there are some cons. Here goes:

Pros:
- Ice pulse function that works well 70% of the time.
- Mixes ingredients pretty well

Cons
- Sometimes I get several fairly large piece of ice that haven't been crushed, and no matter how long I pulse the thing it won't crush it all.
- Sometimes powders get stuck to the sides and aren't mixed in, but that's more rare.

I should note that I have used this only to make smoothies, and that I put in canned fruit and ice and powders/sugars. I generally make 1-2 smoothies a week, but sometimes will go for a week or two without making any.

Aside on a personal note, (in other words, my bad - no fault of Hamilton Beach's) I also recently put it in the dishwasher even though it isn't meant for it, and that was when it started to warp. To top that off, the lid to it was stolen from our storage unit during a move, (it was in a box that was taken), so I usually just put a tupperware lid on top while it blends. A friend bought a Vita Mix and we tried her and like it pretty well--but $400+?!?!? Then we came across a demo of the blendtec. I liked the contemporary angular look and more compact size. The sample recipes were terrific both hubby and I agreed. This too is $400+ but maybe we were in the mood we bought it. Once home we could see the power and useablity were quite a bit better than the Vitamix. I don't care if it grinds golf clubs and hockey puts -- actually this is a disturbing classless approach to getting people to pay attention to a machine that is truly incrediable. One complaint - I would like more receipes and more recipes toward particular diet needs like low-g diets. We love our machine and, by the way, borrowed our blendtec yesterday, she promises to bring it back today but she's late. She made a smoothie breakfast for her family. I was worried a refurbished blender would be short lived but I am happy to say it's been working fine for me since day one. It is very powerful and liquifies anything you put in it. It is loud but then again, that comes with the power. Good solid glass makes it a bit top heavy and you have to be careful moving it since it doesn't snap in place like the plastic blenders do. The Hamilton Beach HBB250S is a nice machine that does a solid job of blending. It doesn't move while blending juices or smoothies, because the base is solid and stays put;I like that.

We make a lot of smoothies and icees and this blender blends ice better than any blender I have seen. It is even better than the smoothies in our mall. The ice has an almost silky tecture that is fantastic. I think it is the specialized way the container and blade is shape cause all of the ice is pulled down. We are saving a lot of money making our own drinks with just ice and fruit than paying $5 and $8 a drink elsewhere. This is especially good since my wife and I are grad students and we don't have the extra money anyways but we do like iced drinks during our studies. I returned the item (I had 90 days to do so) and got my full reimburse. Then,I decided to do a deeper market scouting, and finally I discovered Waring. I am going to be concise: this blender is definitely what I was looking for, strong, powerful, efficient, easy to clean, functional, simple, with no useless gadgets. I love the 1 horse power engine! The plastic jar is light and easy to handle. Yes, you have to put your hand on top of it to hold it, and so what? That will be only for a few seconds because this is a commercial machine that works fast. I do not see any problems with the lid, it is flexible and fits. In conclusion: if you are looking for a blender to be used just once in a while with some soft ingredients, buy anyone. There are plenty of them. But, if you are a serious, I mean, a heavy blender user (like I am), do not hesitate: buy this one. I just moved into my first apartment a few months ago, and purchased this blender to make the morning smoothie or winter soup. For those purposes, this blender is excellent. However, for things like breaking ice, the blades are not quite that powerful.

The Good:

1) This blender has ten speeds: HIGH: grate, ice breaker, milkshake, smoothie, and icy drink. LOW: Stir, aerate, puree, crumb, and chop.

2) This blender's glass jar flips, which does save a lot of room and is useful especially for smaller countertops...just don't lose the top!

The Bad:

1) After about 30 seconds of blending, this device emits a pungent smoke smell. At first, I was afraid the fire alarm would sound, but now I just blend in 30 second intervals, which is kind of a pain sometimes, but it's better than having the entire kitchen smell like smoke.

2) After a few months, my "high" button no longer seems to function. It doesn't stay down when pressed. Not being a professional cook, this doesn't bother me too much, but it's a little annoying.

3) There's no simple speed for 'mix.' Again being an amateur cook, I'd rather have a simple "mix" speed than "aerate," which I doubt I will ever use.
