Online shopping for Blenders

I purchased this blender to replace my 8 year old blender that popped a hole while crushing ice. My primary purpose for using this is to crush ice and make blended coffees. My husband didn't want me to spend too much money so after looking at this model in the store, I purchased it. Upon first use, it leaked through the bottom. I found I didn't have the base tightened all the way--something that wasn't mentioned at all in the book that came with--and after tightening, it still seemed to leak. I thought that perhaps liquid had been trapped and hoped that tightening the base would fix the problem. Alas, the second time I used it, it leaked again. I mentioned it to my husband and asked him to tighten the base, which he obligingly did. The third time, I decided to just put water in it to see if it still leaks, which it does. The only positive is my husband witnessed this firsthand and has given me the go ahead to purchase a more expensive and hopefully higher quality, better built blender. I have puchased two smoothie makers made by Back to Basics. This machine beats them in all ways.
The previous smoothie makers had dispensers that filled the glass verrry slowly and just created cleaning problems. We found it easier to just pour the smoothies, but the blending jars weren't design for efficient pouring and generally made a mess. When the blending jar from my second machine was dropped and the spout broke off, I got on line to order a replacement jar. The jar alone was almost as much as a new machine. While searching for a new machine, I decided to try this one. It works great for smoothies. The fruit and ice were blended faster and smoother in this machine than in any of the other smoothie makers and blenders I've used. It also has a glass blending jar, which is easy to clean. The pouring spout is well designed and pours without any mess. The lid has a really tight seal. The base is made of a highier quality material than the other Back to Basic machines I've owned. I wish I could recommend this made in the USA product but we don't always make long lasting products. This blender does perform great as long as you don't break any of the parts. OK, there really is only one part to break, the blade. I've broken it twice in the two years that I've owned it. Once by accidentally dropping it on my stone tile floor, the other time by just using it. That's right, it's supposed to crush ice easily, but I've never tested it with ice, just frozen fruit in very moderate quantities. The plastic holder for the blade still gave up. I'm going to get something more sturdy this time. The engine started giving off too much burning odor anyway and that just for making smoothies twice a week. I LOVE THIS MACHINE!
I make alot of bread and bread products and I have had no mixer that compares to this one. This machine is loud (it is a big job machine) but wow, does it get the job done. An "Auto Knead" feature...what a great idea...

I've had many, many different stand mixers and this one is top of the line and my favorite. This mixer does it all and it's light weight compared to others. This machine takes up very little counter space compared to other machines in its class.
I'm in Love...

My wife and I noticed on first use that the motor emitted an electric-ozone smell. It might be oil in the motor windings left over from the manufacturing process, but if it's ozone from arcing brushes, it wouldn't bode well for long life under heavy use. We don't use a blender very often, so the smell hasn't gone away yet after several uses. My wife later called me for help to remove the cutter for cleaning. It just refused to come out. The manual says to insert the provided removal tool into the cutter base and turn clockwise to release it. Look out, you have the potential for a carpal-tunnel injury and potential unit breakage here, because the user's manual has it backwards: If you instead turn it counter-clockwise as would be most logical (looking down at the bottom of the inverted bowl) it will release with just about the amount of resistance you'd expect. While blenders in general are dangerous if misused, I also get bad vibes from a warning in the manual saying that if the switch is not first set to , the unit will start up as soon as you insert the bowl into the base. That big toggle switch up front looks pretty easy to accidentally bump to the position, so watch it. Other than that, it functions OK and styling is nice, matching well with our other SS appliances. I ordered this West Bend Blender after discovering that I had moved to an area that didn't have one of those famous coffee franchises within 25 miles of my house...and my need for a mocha frappachino became unbearable.

At first I was worried that the motor couldn't bear up to crushing the ice that's needed, but ..so far...I've had no problem whatsoever.
